Definition of «own goal»

An own goal is a term used in soccer, hockey and other sports where one team scores an unintended goal by their opponent. It occurs when a player from the attacking team accidentally deflects or directs the ball into his or her own net while trying to prevent the opposing team from scoring. An own goal is recorded as a goal scored for the opposing team and a goal conceded by the player who committed the error, resulting in a negative impact on their team's score.
